Round 1 and Round 2 typically get different applicants and thus if applying for R2, one should also change up their strategy accordingly. And so with that in mind – what is it that R2 is looking for?
Well let’s first breakdown the type of applicants we see during the two different rounds.
Round 1 applicants have proven that they’re prepared and given that, are typically more “ “elite” applicants. That means usually admissions is expecting more well-rounded experiences such as high GMAT/GRE and strong academic backgrounds. Of course for Round 2, admissions are still expecting a high caliber application; however given Round 2’s larger volume of applicants, their criteria may be more diverse. It’s during Round 2 that they may be looking for more diverse applicants to create a truly diverse class. Thus in Round 2, on top of strong scores, work experience, and academic background, the essays are ever the more important. It’s vital to use the essays to “stand out”, bringing something distinctive to the program. One’s application has to go beyond quantitative at this point as they use Round 2 to fill up most of the class.
Besides excelling in the essays, another expectation of Round 2 is that applicants have had more time to work on their application. Thus Admissions will expect a more refined and polished application. While a Round 1 applicant's “less polished” application can be written off as enthusiastic, Round 2 applicants have a higher level of competition and so standards will be higher. Mistakes cannot be afforded; it’s expected that the applicant’s story is more thorough and clearer–especially with the career goals, growth, and how an MBA, and the program specifically, comes into play. The essays need to show self-reflection and enthusiasm.
